Depends on the player really, survival for the more casual experience (obviously) apocalypse if you like a tougher survival experience. IMO the multi-hit in survival makes zombies too easy to fight. Honestly i cant play singleplayer without it anymore, it changes the game entirely though as the npc survivors go around looting what they need, even setting up their own bases, claiming houses and barricading. They affect performance heavily since they go around migrating zombies, killing them and each other as soon as they spawn in.
